Mini Bio:
Elias Maroso is an artist and researcher dedicated to the production of objects, interventions in space, and energetic devices, establishing connections between different mediums and study references. He holds a Ph.D. in Visual Arts from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, with an emphasis on Languages and Contexts of Creation. As a founding member of the Sala Dobradiça project, he participated in the 7th and 8th Mercosur Biennials, collaborating on exhibitions with artists from Brazil and abroad. In his activities, Maroso has executed works at Druckwerkstatt, Kunst Quartier Bethanien (Berlin/Germany), through the Goethe-Institut, and for the Aliança Francesa Contemporary Art Prize. He was also nominated for the PIPA Contemporary Art Prize (Year 11) and was a finalist in the PIPA Online Prize 2020 category. In 2021, he created pieces for the CoMciência Program of MM Gerdau and joined the roster of artists for the 13th Mercosur Biennial. Recently, he presented his artistic achievements at Itaú Cultural, São Paulo, Brazil, at Ruby Cruel in London, United Kingdom, and at the 28th International Symposium on Electronic Art (ISEA 2023 - @iseainternational) in Paris, France. His works are part of the collections of SESI LAB Center for Art, Science, and Technology in Brasília, Brazil; Itaú Cultural Foundation in São Paulo, Brazil; Instituto PIPA (Deslocamentos Collection) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Museum of Art of Rio Grande do Sul in Porto Alegre, Brazil; Leopoldo Gotuzzo Art Museum in Pelotas, Brazil; Ruth Schneider Museum of Visual Arts in Passo Fundo, Brazil; Exploratorium - Museum of Science, Art & Human Perception in California, USA; and Icelandic writer and collector Sigrún Davíðsdóttir in London, United Kingdom.
What do I create/produce?
When a place does not allow the outside air to circulate with the inside air, there comes the need to find an entrance that is also an exit. If none it is in sight, I take myself to poetically conceive impact structures, space folds, and traversing portals. When I go beyond closed rooms, the notion of space is no longer only one and it varies in different atmospheres. It gives way to art that fits not only in a single space.
Unrestricted by media and research sources, I produce graphic essays, electronic diagrams, urban interventions, voluminous shapes, and energetic pulses that can pass through one or two walls. I join colleagues/accomplices to think about creative activity beyond instituted places. Just because I do not want to stay in a single place, I draw myself to things that, directly or indirectly, involve circulatory and crossing dynamics, which may be artistic, philosophical, or scientific. Before being considered a disciplinary and isolated field of knowledge, I find in the terms of art an opportunity to exceed its functional grammar, to inflect code regimes, to impregnate/vitalize the language and its effects on reality.
